When I was 15 years old, my family and I immigrated to the United States. I was sad to leave my friends and family behind. Having to learn a new language and adapt to a new culture wasn’t easy. Despite my struggles, I was hopeful for the possibilities ahead. I fell in love with this country. The opportunities seemed endless and the American dream felt within reach.
As the oldest sibling, I felt the need to set an example for my younger brother and sister. It felt like my responsibility to lead the way for my family in this new country. The only way I knew to do that was to get a college degree and get a good job. I started my professional career as a Design Engineer. It was gratifying to be working and being a role model.
Despite this accomplishment, something was missing. I was lacking a sense of purpose. I had a job but it wasn't my passion. As time passed, I grew more frustrated with my situation. I had to do something. I finally reached a breaking point so I took a leap of faith and quit my job. I felt real estate has always been a part of my American dream. One that I had to push to the back burner as my family responsibilities took priority.
My first experience in real estate, while buying, fixing and selling houses, took me to the NW side of Chicago. I was touring a house that was nice but the numbers didn't make sense. The asking price was too high for the amount of work it needed. The Realtor I was working with knew this.
When I pointed that out to her, she said: "You're new, your first deal doesn't have to make money as long as you get your feet wet." I was baffled by the "logic" behind her statement. I didn't get the sense that she had my best interests in mind. That one experience was enough motivation for me to get my real estate license.
As a first time home buyer myself, I realized how important it is to have the right support and guidance. Being a great Realtor is personal for me because buying your first home can be overwhelming. It can be more so if your Realtor isn't on your side. I want others to have a better experience than I did. You want to work with an agent that cares about you. Somebody that advocates for you and has your best interest in mind at all times. After all, it's where you're going to make memories for years to come.
Buying a house is one of the most (if not the biggest) investments that a person can make in their life. It can also be extremely stressful.
I've compiled the perfect checklist for you. So you can be in control every step of the way and feel confident in the process.
